It was the 128th Open Championship at Carnoustie, and after four days of brilliant play, giving him a three-shot lead, the Frenchman needed only a double-bogey six on the par four last to claim the Claret Jug.
What he jotted down on the card, however, was a seven, which included a brave six-footer for his triple-bogey, to enter a playoff with 1997 champion Justin Leonard and the ultimate Champion Paul Lawrie.
