On this day in 1919 USGA Secretary Howard Whitney announced that the USGA will confer for the first time with the R&A about modifications to the Rules of Golf and a proposed standardization of the golf ball.
The New York Times called it “one of the most important announcements in the history of golf since the game was brought to this country.”
