A native of Brunswick, Georgia, and star at the University of Florida, Steve Melnyk completed the rare double feat of winning both the US Amateur in 1969 and British Amateur in 1971.
Melnyk was the only player in the 1969 Amateur field to shoot two rounds under par at Oakmont’s par 71 layout, beating Vinny Giles, runner-up for the third consecutive year, by five strokes. Melnyk was a two-time USA Walker Cup Team member and three-time All-American at Florida before turning professional and later becoming a broadcaster.
