He also became the oldest champion on the PGA Tour at 52 years, 10 months and 8 days, a record that still stands. Furthermore, it was his 8th victory in the Greater Greensboro (1938, ’46, ’49, ’50, ’55, ’56, ’60 and ’65), marking yet another PGA Tour record for the most wins in a single tournament, until Tiger Woods equalled it at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and again at the WGC-Bridgestone.
And as if that wasn’t enough, the win came 28 years, 2 months and 17 days after he won his first PGA Tour event at the Oakland Open on January 17, 1937, a record for the longest gap between first and last victories which stood until Raymond Floyd eclipsed it in 1992 by some nine months.
