An early exponent of the long putter, he adopted it in 1989 after watching Sam Torrance, first at the Italian Open and then during the British Masters at Woburn, where he tried it for the first time. The day after putting it in his bag he shot a 66 and has used the putter ever since, including later that year in Australia, where he notched up six victories, including the first of his three Australian PGA Championships.
