He won the prestigious Brabazon Trophy (English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship) in 1981 at Hillside GC. He turned pro the same year and found early success, winning the 1982 KLM Dutch Open before claiming further European Tour victories in 1986 and 1987.
His finest moments, however, came in the Ryder Cups of 1983 and 1985, helping Europe to their first win in 28 years at the Belfry in 1985.
His Ryder Cup record is a superb 6½ points out of a possible 9, with six wins and a half, beating Curtis Strange 2&1 and Raymond Floyd 2up in the singles.
He began playing on the European Senior Tour in 2013.
