The Scotsman’s score of 166, despite bitter easterly winds and lashing rain, beat the previous 36-hole record for an Open at the Old Course by five shots.
Hugh’s elder brother, Andrew, finished two strokes back in a tie for second.
From 1892 onwards, the Open took place over 72 holes, beginning at Muirfield.
