It was the first draw in Ryder Cup history, and the United States retained the Cup. But Nicklaus’s captain, Sam Snead, and some of his team mates were furious.
Snead said, ‘It was ridiculous to give him that putt. We went over there to win, not to be good ol’ boys.’
‘The Concession’, as the gesture became known, sparked off a long friendship between Nicklaus and Jacklin, and led to their collaboration in the design of ‘The Concession Golf Club’ in Florida.
When Nicklaus conceded Jacklin’s putt, ensuring that they both earned half points, he offered the Brit his hand and said, ‘I don’t think you would have missed that putt, but in these circumstances, I would never give you the opportunity.’
