After multiple wins around the world, Baker-Finch won the Open Championship in 1991 at Royal Birkdale by two shots from Mike Harwood.
Following this victory, his game declined. In the 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, while playing with Arnold Palmer, who was making his final appearance in the tournament, Baker-Finch hooked his opening tee shot so badly that it went out of bounds through the fence on the far side of the adjoining 18th.
He finally withdrew from tournament golf in 1997, after shooting a 92 in the first round of The Open at Royal Troon, and focussed instead on golf course design and commentating.
