Not only did he win the first Masters, but also the third one, in 1936. He played in every Masters right up to his death, a total of 27 times.
Winner of 32 PGA titles between 1928 and 1941, he also had the distinction of being the only golfer to beat the great Bobby Jones in 1930—the year of Jones’ Grand Slam—when he claimed the Savannah Open.
In September 2013, Horton’s Green Jacket was sold on auction for $682,229.45, the highest price ever achieved for an item of golfing memorabilia.
Smith hadn’t actually been presented with the jacket, since the tradition only began in 1949, with Sam Snead’s win; but Augusta National retroactively awarded jackets to the nine champions who hadn’t received them.
