The Brit won the championship by two shots over his great rival JH Taylor, who had beaten Vardon to second place in the other Major of that year, The Open Championship at St Andrews.
It was Vardon’s first appearance in the US Open, and came during an exhibition tour in the US to promote Spalding’s ‘Vardon Flyer Ball’—made of gutta-percha and marked with ‘pebbles’ (small raised bumps) rather than the modern dimples.
In winning the US Open, Vardon became the first golfer to have won two different Majors, having already won The Open in 1896, ’98 and ’99.
He did not play again in the US open until 1913, when he lost in a playoff to the amateur Francis Ouimet.
He made his final appearance in 1920, when he was again runner-up, this time to Ted Ray.
