The championship was played in one day over 36 holes, with only 11 players competing.
The winner was Englishman Horace Rawlins, a recent immigrant to the US who had taken up the position of assistant professional at Newport.
Originally from the Isle of Wight, Rawlins had been the pro at Mid Herts Golf Club before leaving England, and had played in just two tournaments before the US Open—both of which he won by two shots from the much more experienced Wille Dunn.
