The winner was Willie Park Snr., of Musselburgh, who received the Challenge Belt but no prize money.
Park would win the Championship three more times, in 1863, 1866, and 1875. His brother Mungo (in 1874) and his son Willie Jnr. (in 1887 and 1889) would also win the Open.
