Smyth was 48 years and 34 days old at the time, surpassing Neil Coles, who was 48 years and 12 days when he won the 1982 Sanyo Open.
It was Smyth’s eighth win, and gave him at least one victory in four successive decades, having first won in 1979.
His record has since been beaten twice by Miguel Angel Jiménez, at the Hong Kong Open of 2012 and 2013.
