Needing a birdie on the par four final hole of the Old Course at St Andrews to tie John Daly, he nearly drove the green, coming to rest just short of the Valley of Sin. Then, following a duffed chip, which trickled just a few metres, he holed a putt from around 20 metres and fell to the ground, pounding the turf with his fists.
Sadly, there was no happy ending for the Italian, as he lost the subsequent four-hole playoff by 19 shots to Daly’s 15, leaving the American with his second Major championship.
