In the event, Rocca came to the 72nd hole needing a birdie to tie Daly, who had already finished. He nearly drove the green, only to fluff his chip into the Valley of Sin. However, he holed the subsequent putt, falling to his knees and beating the ground in delight (see video below, which begins with Rocca on the 17th). Sadly, he went on to lose the four-hole playoff.
Rocca was the first Italian to play in the Ryder Cup, appearing three times for Europe, and amassing a 6-5-0 record, his six wins including a singles victory of 4&2 over Tiger Woods in 1997, which helped Europe claim the Cup.
