The shot secured O’Conner a win over Fred Couples and helped Europe earn a 14-14 draw against the United States for just the second tie in Ryder Cup history. As Europe had won in 1985 and 1987, they held the Cup for a third straight time.
The shot and result was especially sweet for O’Connor, who had been pointless in the Ryder Cup up until then, and was part of the losing Great Britain & Ireland team of 1975.
