With the lead exchanging hands multiple times over the four days the International and USA teams finished deadlocked at 17-17. Tiger Woods from the USA and Ernie Els from the International Team then represented their sides in a playoff. Woods and Els managed to complete three holes – each sinking big putts along the way to keep the playoff going – before it got too dark to continue.
Captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player then consulted with their teams and with one another and decided to share the Presidents Cup.
