On this day in 1938, Fred Astaire completed the second day of filming for the golf sequence in ‘Carefree’, with Ginger Rogers, in which he dances while hitting both irons and drivers.
The two shot-hitting sequences in the dance are done in a single take, and the shots appear to be near-perfect. Indeed, it is said that when the balls were picked up afterwards, they were in two tight groups, with very little dispersion.
Astaire was a keen golfer, who regularly shot in the low 80s, sometimes the high 70s. He had a very fluid, rhythmical swing, as one would expect.
